Trauma-Focused Therapy

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Dr. Vice Downing has specialized training in TF-CBT, a time-limited approach to treating children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, such as medical events, abuse, or neglect. TF-CBT is empirically supported, and it is considered to be the "gold standard" treatment for children with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms often include nightmares, intense and ongoing fear or sadness, avoiding places or people associated with the traumatic event, or acting helpless, hopeless, or withdrawn. TF-CBT provides education about traumatic events, coping skills to manage symptoms, and gradual exposure to memories of the event. Dr. Vice has extensive clinical training in this approach to treatment and is the only psychologist in Central Oregon who is credentialed through the TF-CBT Therapist Certification Program. She also provides training and supervision in TF-CBT to other mental health providers on the West Coast.

  Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Dr. Vice Downing is also trained in CPT, a time-limited approach to treating adults who have experienced trauma, including those with histories of abuse in childhood, accidents, medical trauma, grief, etc. CPT is an empirically supported treatment for PTSD that focuses on challenging and modifying the unhelpful beliefs that arise after traumatic events.
